Hello,

tn_jim_speirs_and_allan_mclaughlan_01092008.jpg

As President of Carluke Rotary for the year 2008/2009, I am using our Club Newsletter to give a very brief insight into my background and why I became involved in Carluke Rotary Club.

Born in Bellside, I run the family milk retail business from my home in Cleland.  Married to Jill, we have two of a family, David and Heather.   At the start of married life Jill and I set up home in Law Village and through friends and local contacts I became interested in and then joined Carluke Round Table, an association which lasted some 15 years, before time caught up with me and I had to resign due to the age rule.

Because of this interest and I suppose as a natural progression I was introduced to and then invited to join The Rotary Club of Carluke some eight years ago.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the social and charitable aspects of membership, serving as assistant Treasurer, Convenor of the International and Foundation Committee, Convenor of the Club Services Committee and latterly as Junior and Senior Vice President of the Club.

L to R: President Jim with District Governor Nominee Allan MacLaughlan

Among other things, I would like to use my year as Club President to consolidate and if possible increase the membership of this very active Club.

At my first meeting after taking up the post of President, I stated that the reason I had joined Rotary was because it seemed the "right thing to do".  By this I meant that when people less fortunate than ourselves are starving or dying or when local organisations or individuals need assistance, the "right thing to do", the "gut instinct" is to offer some help, and that's what Rotary is all about!

So if you would like to enjoy the company of an excellent group of well motivated, like-minded individuals  please accept an open invitation to come along and join with us and learn more about the Rotary experience.

We meet 6.15 for 6.30pm on Monday evenings at the Cartland Bridge Hotel, Lanark.  Contact either myself or our Club Secretary Ken Mackie in the first instance, we guarantee you will be made very welcome.

Yours in Rotary

Jim
